IS2H4C Biannual Newsletter – Vol. 5

Dear Readers,

After a busy spring and summer, we’re back with the latest from across the IS2H4C community.

The past few months may not have been about major updates, but plenty has been happening behind the scenes and across our hubs. Our partners have been sharing IS2H4C insights at conferences, workshops and industry gatherings, strengthening connections and keeping the conversation around industrial symbiosis and circularity moving forward.

At the same time, we’ve been preparing for an active autumn, with several opportunities coming up to meet, exchange ideas and bring our work to new audiences.

In this edition, we look back at where IS2H4C has been represented since April and give you a preview of what’s coming next. ew research outputs, the emphasis is clear: making Hubs for Circularity work in real conditions.

IS2H4C Returns to the Hubs4Circularity Cluster Webinar Series

IS2H4C will be featured in the Hubs4Circularity Cluster Webinar Series on 30 October 2026, this time focusing on energy management in Hubs for Circularity.

This will be IS2H4C’s second contribution to the webinar series, which brings together Horizon Europe projects working to advance the development and implementation of Hubs for Circularity across Europe. The series provides a valuable space for projects to exchange knowledge, explore complementary approaches and strengthen synergies around shared challenges.

Further details about the programme, speakers and registration will be announced soon.

Stay tuned and follow IS2H4C on LinkedIn to make sure you do not miss the update.

3RD EUREGIO Hydrogen Business Event

The 3rd Euregio Hydrogen Business Event took place in Hengelo on 1 October 2026, bringing together industry, research and innovation to explore the technologies and conditions needed for a more sustainable European industry. Keynote speeches and interactive sessions covered e-methanol, e-methane, methane decomposition and CO₂ capture.

IS2H4C contributed to the discussion through a keynote by Michael Kohlgrüber, WP3 Lead, entitled “Hydrogen as a Bridge to a Climate-Neutral Future? Non-Technical Enablers and Barriers”. His presentation addressed the wider conditions needed for hydrogen solutions to succeed, complementing the programme’s technological focus. H2Hub representatives also presented a poster, adding a perspective from the hub to the event’s exchanges.

IS2H4C featured in European research success stories

This September, IS2H4C was featured in European Research with Impact, a publication from Germany’s National Contact Point for Digital and Industrial Technologies, under the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Highlighted among eight large-scale Horizon Europe projects, our feature explores how industrial areas can become Hubs for Circularity through shared resources, infrastructure and knowledge. From the DigitalH4C collaboration platform to CO₂ capture trials at Industriepark Höchst, it offers a glimpse into the technologies and cooperation supporting this transition.

Read the publication and find IS2H4C on pages 20–22.

6th Consortium Meeting in Graz, Austria

From 23 to 25 September, the IS2H4C consortium came together again for our project meeting, hosted by our partner AEE INTEC in Graz, Austria.

With plenty happening across the project, the two and a half days allowed partners to tackle key operational topics, align on ongoing activities and work together through a series of internal workshops.

But it didn’t all happen around the meeting table. We’ll also had the opportunity to take a closer look at AEE INTEC’s water treatment facilities, connecting our project discussions with practical technologies and applications.

Presentations at IFORS Vienna

How can industrial hubs manage energy flows, adapt to uncertainty and strengthen cooperation? IS2H4C explored these questions through three presentations at IFORS Vienna, under the theme “Decision Support for a Sustainable World”. Jiayun Wang presented research on the dynamic control and operations of industrial symbiosis networks, Tobias Løvebakke Nielsen focused on optimising industrial flexibility in energy hubs, and Daniela Guericke addressed energy flows in Hubs for Circularity under uncertainty.

Together, these contributions highlighted how Operations Research supports more sustainable, flexible and resource-efficient industrial zones. The findings also explored how policy support should evolve: subsidies can kick-start recycling in early-stage hubs, while disposal taxes may deliver comparable recycling gains at a lower societal cost as hubs mature.

7th Symposium on Circular Economy & Sustainability in Maastricht

IS2H4C was represented at the 7th Symposium on Circular Economy & Sustainability in Maastricht, the Netherlands, where a University of Twente doctoral researcher and project task leader, Savvas Papadopoulos presented their recent publication, “White-Box Modeling & Impact Evaluation in H₂-Integrated Hubs for Circularity”.

The symposium provided an opportunity to share findings on hydrogen-integrated Hubs for Circularity, discuss the research with colleagues from academia and industry, and build connections across the circular economy community.

Turkish Hub Matchmaking Workshop

Within the scope of Work Package 4, our project partners İMMİB and TÜPRAŞ organised the Turkish Hubs for Circularity Matchmaking Workshop in İzmir on 5 May 2026, creating a goal-oriented environment where companies could transform their existing waste and by-product streams into new collaboration opportunities.

During the event, participants from different sectors had the opportunity not only to network but also to jointly evaluate resource needs, supply-demand dynamics, and potential areas for matching in waste and by-product utilisation. As a result, concrete opportunities for collaboration emerged in the areas of cost reduction, resource efficiency, and innovative use of resources.

21st International 3D GeoInfo Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria

On 28 September 2026, Hisham Afash from the UT presented the paper “Towards Digital Twinning in Hubs for Circularity: A Green Hydrogen Case Study” at the 21st International 3D GeoInfo Conference in Sofia. The presentation introduced a data-driven Digital Twin prototype for the H4C green hydrogen hub in Almelo, linking renewable energy systems with circular flows of hydrogen, oxygen, heat, and water. The work demonstrated how geospatial and system modelling can support scenario-based simulation and environmental performance assessment within industrial symbiosis networks.
